- Story: Fighters are notorious for having interesting stories but Malaipet's biography is material for a New York Times best-seller. Born in the jungles of Thailand, Malaipet grew up in a wooden hut that featured a pet elephant for an alarm clock. The village served as a rice farm but coming from a family of fighters, farming was not to be in his future. As is common for fighters in Thailand, Malaipet began studying and training Muay Thai at the age of six and by the age of eight he had made his pro debut.
At the age of 12, his family made the heart-wrenching decision to send him to a fight gym in Bangkok, which is where Malaipet would experience electricity in a modern civilization for the first time. The idea of being sent away by his family may be shocking to some but it's actually a common practice in Thailand's third world environment. Some families find that the professional fight teams can provide for their sons better than they can.
From the age of 12-15 he had little to no contact with his family. At 15, Malaipet returned to visit his family in their home village. However, he remained a professional member of the fight team and eventually had to return. Malaipet would remain a member of the team until he turned 22. In the U.S., a person is usually just entering the professional world at the age of 22 but in Thailand, that's the usual retirement age for a fighter.
Malaipet arrived in America shortly after his 22nd birthday after being exposed to the U.S. when a team comprised of fighters from Thailand toured the States. He was eventually “traded” to a U.S.-based gym after marrying an American woman. A relationship with a female was a new concept to Malaipet considering girlfriends were grounds for banishment from his fight team in Thailand. Fighters rarely break the rules instituted by their gym because to be kicked out would mean not knowing where your next meal was coming from.
In the U.S., Malaipet regained regular contact with his family and currently sends back a significant portion of his winnings from each fight so that he can support his family back home in Thailand. After having fought over 180 Muay Thai fights, Malaipet made the recent transition to MMA in large part so that he could better support his family. - MMA Record: 3-2
